Bricklayers work with clay bricks, concrete blocks and mortar – but there’s much more to it than just laying bricks! Bricklaying suites people with enjoy practical outdoors work, are able to work at heights and who are physically fit.

Module 3: Laying different brick bonds

Module 4: Build corners and angles in different brick bonds

Module 5: Foundations and Piers

Module 6: Build – in Door frames and Windows

Module 7: Arch Building

Module 8: Small Buildings (Miscellaneous)

Module 9: Build with concrete blocks

Type of Course:

This is a practical course and the modules will be done in a fully equipped workshop.

If what you have learned at work, from other programs, courses, from life experience or training provided at work is relevant to this program, you may be entitled to gain subject credits or exemptions.  A RPL (Recognition of prior learning) process is available for recognition and assessment of your skills. Relevant credits will be passed.

Qualifications:

On completion of this course the student will earn the following:

• Registration on SETA National Learner Data Base
• SETA statement of results for the following unitstandards:

  • 261663 – Build masonry superstructures using concrete hollow unitstandards
  • 261659 – Build masonry superstructures using solid unitstandards
  • 14662 – Set out, excavate, cast concrete strip foundations and build foundation walling
  • 259604 – Verify compliance to safety, health and environmental requirements in the workplace
  • 254220 – Provide primary emergency care/first aid as an advanced first responder
  • 14580 – Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications
  • 14632 – Build decorative masonry elements
  • 261663 – Build masonry superstructures using concrete hollow unitstandards
  • 261659 – Build masonry superstructures using solid unitstandards

Course Duration:

The course is over a period of 3 years, where 14 weeks a year is at the college and the rest is done within job placement

If you have an eye for detail and enjoy working with your hands, a career in plastering or painting could be just right for you. You will be taught how to prep surfaces, which tools to use correctly and how to paint with the best techniques.

Course Content:

Module 1: Safety and Building Industry

Module 2: Determine sequences and their individual components and assess surface condition in terms of preparation requirements

Module 3: Prepare surfaces for the application of primer and paint by removing fittings

Module 4: Identify, select and maintain tools and equipment

Module 5: Prepare materials, tools and equipment for applying primer and paint

Module 6: Prime surfaces for painting

Module 7: Coat surfaces with paint

Module 8: Demonstrate a responsibility toward the safety of self, others and the environment

  • 261666 – Prime and apply paint to surface
  • 261697 – Prepare surfaces for painting

The linings are for both walls and ceilings. The work involves making fixing plaster sheets and cornices and fixing them to timber and metal framing. Plasterers also manufacture and fix ornamental plasterwork.

  • 261657 – Plaster Surfaces
  • 9971  – Apply screeds to a concrete floor
  • 9969 – Prepare for plastering

You’ll learn the practical skills and techniques of how to perform measurements and calculations, interpret plans, use different types of tile adhesives, how to prepare surfaces, waterproof wet areas and apply grout. The course also covers the tools of the trade (power tools, tiles cutting tools, spirit levels, squares and plumb lines).

Module 3: Cut Tiles according to specification

Module 4: Prepare Surfaces for Tiling

Module 5: Mix Adhesive and Grout
